As many Europeans that look for a place to spend the cold months in a warmer place we have chosen Búzios, as it its wonderful place for many reasons. But what really disturbs the eyes and nose when entering Búzios is the dirt and the carelessness of some visitors and people who live and own a property in this unique paradise. It is very difficult to understand this ignorance and the attitude concerning their own rubbish.
Especially during the holiday season it is an big challenge to deal with the enormous quantity of garbage. Many seem to believe the Prefeitura will take care of it and that they pay taxes and the rest in not their problem nor their responsibility. Just yesterday (December the 31th) we saw how young people throw their beer cans out of the car into the nature. Owners who construct their houses leave the constructions rubbish in front of their walls near green areas and they seriously believe the prefeitura will take care of this. No closed garbage container are there, so hungry creatures and abandon domestic animals tear the rubbish bags and the wind blows the garbage in all directions.
People dispose their waste on private and public plots and sometimes burry it. Out of sight out of mind. Isn’t it a very short-sighted and sad attitude?
In Búzios you are punished if you cut trees in order to protect the nature, but you are not penalized to pollute the environment. It would be so important to separate the garbage. This would not only create jobs, but would also help the nature, the tourism and the reputation and the image of Búzios. It would be so important everyone takes care of it’s own rubbish and to educate everyone about the consequences of littering the earth.
In France there is a tradition to clean the property end of the year to welcome the New Year. If every property owner and tenant would just clean a few meters around where they live and feel responsible, Búzios could be a much nicer place. One should not wait for a miracle to happen, just do it yourself. Happy New Year.
